New Law Requires Drivers to Give Cyclists a 3-Foot Cushion or Pay $154 Fine

Violators can be fined up to $154.

A new law signed by Gov. Jerry Brown into law Monday will require motorists to give cyclists at least three feet of space when passing or driving behind them, KTLA reports.

The Three Feet for Safety Act solidifies prior language that simply stated that drivers "keep a safe distance."

However, if there isn't enough room to maintain a three-foot distance, drivers must “slow to a speed that is reasonable and prudent."

Given that Colorado Boulevard will soon be reduced from six lanes to four with bike lanes on both sides, how do you think this law would have an impact in Eagle Rock? Is three feet reasonable?

The law is slated to take effect on Sept. 14, 2014. Violators can be fined up to $154.
