Voices Against—and For—Bike Lanes
Here's what was said before Thursday's surprise 4-4 vote by the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council not to support the city's plans to install bike lanes on Figueroa.
For the first time since the issue of bike lanes along Figueroa Street gained prominence in community conversations in meetings, the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council voted Thursday at its monthly board meeting not to officially support the Department of Transportation's plan to install buffered bike lanes in place of auto traffic lanes along N. Figueroa Street. Instead, the council voted to support an alternative bike route that would run on less-trafficked streets roughly parallel to Figueroa.
Here are short videos of some of the public comments—both for and against bike lanes—that preceded the 4-4 vote, which had two abstentions, and appears to have caught many supporters of the biking community by surprise.
