4-Car Pileup Leaves 1 Woman Dead, 2 Hospitalized With Major Injuries In The Bay Area

Police believe the driver who caused the chain reaction on Highway 101 was driving under the influence.

EAST PALO ALTO, CA — Police said a man who is suspected of driving under the influence crashed his car Sunday on Highway 101 which caused chain reaction that killed one woman and put two other people in the hospital with major injuries.

At around 2 a.m. on Sunday, California Highway Patrol officers from the Redwood City office responded to a crash on Highway 101.

CHP said the initial investigation indicates that a man driving white Acura SUV was traveling on U.S.-101 near south University Avenue when he crashed into the rear end of a gray Toyota Rav4, disabling it across lanes of traffic.

Police said a woman driving a white Subaru SUV then crashed into the Toyota and then into the center concrete median.

After that, a man crashed a gray BMW sedan into another car, police said.

San Mateo County fire and paramedics arrived and determined the woman driving the Subaru had died from her injuries, police said.

The driver and passenger of the Toyota Rav4 sustained major injuries and were transported to Stanford Hospital, police said.

The drivers of the Acura and BMW had minor injuries and were also transported to the hospital, police said.

Officers said after their investigation they arrested the driver of the Acura on suspicion of driving under the influence, resulting on injuries to another.

Police have not released the identity of the driver arrested at this time.
