Kayser to Seek LAUSD Support in CRA Lawsuit

When the Los Angeles Unified School District meets later Tuesday,  the board’s new member--Silver Lake resident Bennett Kayser--is expected to introduce a potentially controversial motion.

It will urge the board to file an amicus brief in the lawsuit around Governor Jerry Brown’s efforts to direct monies away from local redevelopment agencies  and toward other basic social services, such as education.

According to a statement released by Kayser’s office, “At LAUSD, 79% of all students are receiving free or reduced lunch (a family of four earning below $41,348), meaning they are most likely to be hurt by state budget cuts as well as cuts in public education."

Last month, the Los Angeles City Council voted 13 to 0 in favor of an urgency ordinance that keeps L.A.’s redevelopment agency alive and intact--by moving roughly $97 million in redevelopment funds to Los Angeles County.

According to LA CRA spokesperson David Bloom, Echo Park/Silver Lake has no projects directly under CRA jurisdiction, though projects in Los Feliz and Chinatown border the region  But, he said, the proposed L.A River revitalization plan would have been affected by a local CRA shutdown.
