New Year's Eve with the Henry Clay People at the Satellite Has A Special Significance

A Silver Lake New Year's Eve tradition becomes a great way to combine volunteerism and celebration this year.

As they have for the past few years, neo-punkers The Henry Clay People will ring in 2013 with a set of cover songs featuring lead singers from local bands.

They'll also perform a set of originals starting at 11:15 p.m. up to the countdown.

Some of the material will undoutedly end up on a benefit album the band has been recording during its Monday night residency this month at the Satellite.

Sales will benefit the Songs for Kids Foundation. Band member Andy Siara has known founder Josh Rifkin for a long time.

"The live record will be about 20 songs compiled from the entire month," said Siara in an email.

"NYE will be a big part of it because the vibe of our NYE shows seems to be much more party like, which is what we want to capture with the live album."

Songs for Kids Foundation brings musicians to hospitals, special needs kids camps and all the places where kids are in need.

When he is in town, Siara and other local musicians visit patients at Children's Hospital in Los Feliz.

"We only do covers,"  said Siara in an email. "Andy Creighton from The World Record also goes every week with me.

"We also try to get bigger names to come out and perform. [Recently] we had Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke (voices of Spongebob and Patrick from the cartoon). A couple of months ago we had Fun. It is always a good time."

The album will be coming later this winter.

But meantime it's not to late to catch the Henry Clay People along with Kissing Cousins, Torches, The Lonely Wild New Year's Eve at the Satellite.

Kissing Cousins start at 9 p.m.  Entry is $10, with cocktails $5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
