Photos: Community, LaBonge Meet to 'Vision' Silver Lake

Silver Lake Neighborhood Council Vice Chair Charles Herman-Wurmfeld led the two-hour session. It began with a breaking of the bread and ended with a lot of good ideas--including a new swimming pool and a DASH Bus for Sunset Junction.

Silver Lake's Neighborhood Council often holds events at the beautiful Holy Virgin Mary Cathedral on Micheltorena Street.

And this was a good one, with more than 40 people arriving to sit in a big circle in the auditorium Monday night.

They'd been invited by SLNC Vice-Chair Charles Herman-Wurmfeld to share their hopes and aspirations for their neighborhood.

And they did, one at a time as everyone took a minute to explain themselves and their concerns.

Some worried about the homeless.

Others were more concerned about public transportation and walkability.

Still others wanted to be sure the neighborhood was ready for "the big one" with emergency preparedness training.

Council District 4 representative Tom LaBonge also shared his concerns.

Taking what some jokingly called a "long minute,"  he urged folks to look at how history can explain a lot of things, including current land use.

Some Bread, Some Pizza

Herman-Wurmfeld began the evening with a breaking of the bread, which everyone took in good spirits.

Pizza was also served.

Later in the evening, folks broke into groups to further develop ideas around themes like transportation and public safety.

Local residents Ronald van Ammers took photos of the resulting white board notes.

You can see those slides in the attached media gallery.

Holy Virgin Mary Cathedral will also be the site of a community meeting Thursday to discuss the new wall and other changes at the Sunset Boulevard and Sanborn Avenue location of Cafe Stella.

The meeting will begin at 5:30 pm at 650 Micheltorena St. in Silver Lake.
