The Contra Costa County Historical Society presents The Anza Expedition 250th and the CCCHS 75th anniversaries at its 2026 Annual Meeting and Luncheon.

This year's program highlights the milestone of our own historical society as well as that of the extraordinary travels of the Anza Expedition. CCCHS75 will be presented by CCCHS staff, and Anza250 will be presented by Beverly Lane, a local history museum curator, author, California historian, and resident of San Ramon Valley.

As the Declaration of Independence was being written, the Anza colonizing expedition arrived at its destination in San Francisco. Expedition members, 240 in total, included men, women, and children representing a mix of Indigenous, African, and European heritage.

In present-day Contra Costa County, Anza’s exploratory group camped near Rodeo at the mouth of the San Pablo Bay. The next day, they stopped on a hill just west of the Carquinez Bridge and noted Mare Island and the Puerto Dulce (Suisun Bay). They continued to the Martínez area and camped near Concord.
