5 Arrested on DUI Charges in 6-Hour Checkpoint on South Coast Hwy 101

Five people were arrested on drunken driving charges and 10 vehicles were impounded during a six-hour checkpoint starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday on South Coast Highway 101, authorities said.

The Labor Day weekend inspections were conducted in the 1800 block of the highway, said sheriff’s Deputy Brenda Sipley in a news release.

By the time the traffic stops ended at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, 833 vehicles had been seen, and 36 cars given a secondary inspection, Sipley said.

A dozen people were evaluated for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Names of the arrested people weren’t made public Saturday but would be available next week at the Encinitas station, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.

“In addition, 19 citations were issued for various license violations and 10 vehicles were towed,” Sipley said.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
