On April 23rd, 2007 the Surf Sculpture Committee of the Cardiff Botanical Society, a committee of the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce, now Cardiff 101Main Street Association, and Matthew Antichevich agreed to the commission of “The Magic Carpet Ride." The Cardiff Chamber of Commerce held the copyright to the art and now shares it with the artist. Admirably this was not the first large bronze art casting that this Chamber committee sponsored.
Upon completion, the city graciously accepted the artwork as a gift and provided the location. And caring citizens provided the pedestal.
THE MAGIC CARPET RIDE, now a.k.a. Cardiff Kook was unveiled and it has become an iconic Cardiff -by–the-Sea image. We are thankful to all the citizens that contributed time, energy and money to make this a reality and the city for offering it a home.

The Cardiff 101 Main Street Association, (C101), through the Cardiff Botanical Society, CBS, continues its stewardship of Carpentier Park that it created. C101 is very fortunate to have horticulturalist, Linda Lee offer her caring professionalism to maintain this little community gem.

The City of Encinitas contributes funds for the upkeep of this water wise, organic public garden, but even with Linda contributing a large amount of time and money and volunteer efforts, we are always in need of funds to keep up with costs. Her efforts have attracted deserved attention in the press, highlighted by a five page feature in San Diego Home and Garden, as well as an on-site lecture by published and acclaimed horticulturalist author Pat Welch and much more.
Last year we have initiated citizen sponsorships of inspirational quote pavers and engraved bricks to help with costs. http://www.cardiff101.com/?page_id=588
Last year, C101 began to license the use of the image of “the Magic Carpet Ride”, aka Cardiff Kook to help fund the ongoing maintenance efforts of Carpentier Park. Every little bit helps.
We are in the process of negotiating with parties that have been monetizing the name and image of “ The Magic Carpet Ride”. C101 would like to invite interested parties to contact us to discuss licensing opportunities. We have worked with Fred Caldwell and his production of the Kook Calendar, (http://www.thecardiffkook.org/blog/cardiff-kook-calendar), and are working with a few other entities in the community.
We look forward to forming new and mutually advantageous partnerships so we can continue the stewardship and beautification of our cherished Carpentier Park.
Come by and enjoy one of Cardiff-by-the Sea’s little treasures, Carpentier Park.
