Leucadia 101 Main Street Receives Prestigious Designation

The following is an announcement from Leucadia 101 Main Street.

Leucadia 101 Main Street is proud to announce having become a Designated Certified California Main Street.

This has been a long process for Leucadia 101, which was founded as a non-profit in Ocotober of 2003 based on the Main Street model and its “Four Point Approach” ™  to revitalize and preserve their downtowns and  assist in the growth and vitality of aging business districts.   Unfortunately, just shortly after this time, as part of the California state budget cuts, funding for the state Main Street program was cut. This meant no money for the administrative staffing and associated expenses needed for oversight of all of the Main Street programs in California. Fortunately, the Main Street Program was saved at the state level and incorporated into the State Parks and Recreation Department, Office of Historic Preservation but with very limited funding for any significant staff oversight.    At that time, the California Main Street Alliance (CAMSA) formed, made up of several California Main Street Executive Directors, to act as the overseeing body on a short-term basis until the program regained its funding at the state level.  But that never happened and CAMSA has remained in operation for the last nine years, doing more and more every year to oversee the local Main Street Programs in California.

Meanwhile, new aspiring Main Streets organizations such as Leucadia 101 had no way to become certified without the infrastructure at the state level in place. All that was involved in this process just came to a halt in those years.  However, with the growing stability and success of CAMSA very well established now, they can begin certifying new Main Streets, and this year, Leucadia 101, being an aspiring Main Street for quite some time, was offered the opportunity to apply. After a very lengthy and comprehensive application process that involved researching a lot of facts and figures on Leucadia’s history, and its past and present economic development, as well as our goals in serving our community as a Main Street organization, we were successful and have been approved!  This will allow us to use the terminology as a California Designated Certified Main Street in all our materials as well as the use of all the resources at the state and national Main Street levels.

In addition to this great news, on November 9th, the California State Historical Resources Commission, which meets quarterly in different parts of California and this meeting happens to be in San Diego, will present a resolution to Leucadia 101 Main Street to recognize our achievement in becoming the most recent California Main Street Community. Leucadia 101 Board President William Morrison and Vice President Steve Shackelton will be on hand to receive this award.
