Bessie Love: Watch a Film Staring this Gem in Encinitas History
Catch the Saturday screening of her 1929 film 'Broadway Melody.'

Silent film The Artist debuted this year with critical acclaim, even earning the Academy Awards' top spot of Best Picture. That movie is a throwback to Hollywood’s earliest days, a time when Bessie Love — an Academy Award-nominated actress who called Encinitas home — was a leading lady in silent films.
In 1929 Love managed to make a triumphant transition into ‘talkies’ (movies with audio) when she stared in Hollywood’s first musical, Broadway Melody. This weekend the community is invited to come celebrate the work of this once-upon-a-time Encinitas resident.
The Encinitas Historical Society will be screening Broadway Melody at , which has been standing since 1883 and is our community’s oldest building. The screening begins at 7 p.m. and is $8 per person. You can reserve a seat by calling 760.753.5726 or emailing info@encinitashistoricalsociety.org.
