Coast Guard Stops Panga Boat With 13 Migrants Near Encinitas​

All 13 people aboard the boat were taken into custody, according to the Coast Guard.

ENCINITAS, CA — The U.S. Coast Guard stopped a panga-style boat carrying 13 people off the coast of Encinitas, officials announced.

A patrol aircraft with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Air and Marine Operations spotted the boat at about 7:20 p.m. Friday roughly 22 miles west of Encinitas, according to the Coast Guard.

The agency notified the Coast Guard, which diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Haddock and Coast Guard Cutter Benjamin Bottoms crews. Both launched their small boat crews for the interdiction.

All 13 people aboard the boat were taken into custody, according to the Coast Guard. The 10 men and three women claimed Mexican nationality. They were taken to the Coast Guard's Sector San Diego and transferred to San Clemente Border Patrol personnel.
