DUI Checkpoint in Encinitas Friday Night

Sherriff’s deputies will be manning a DUI checkpoint in downtown Encinitas Friday night. 

The checkpoint will be in 1300 block of S. Coast Highway, and operate from 7:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.

During the checkpoint, deputies will be screening driving for signs of any impairment from alcohol or drugs. Drivers under the influence could face license suspension, more than $10,000 in fees and legal expenses, and potentially, jail time.  Deputies will also be checking to make sure all drivers have a valid license.

These DUI checkpoints aim to curb drunk driving and are placed in areas where that tends to be a problem. Over the past year, DUI collisions have caused three deaths and resulted in 68 wrecks and injured 28 people in Encinitas, according to a news release for the Sherriff’s Encinitas station. 

Funding for this checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Safety Administration.
