Movin' Shoes to Mark Anniversary with Run and Cake

On a good week, Carroll Pope runs 50 to 70 miles. And he still gets a few miles in with friends nearly every Monday at 6 p.m. for the Movin’ Shoes weekly runs.

“I get to hang out, see my friends and go out and share the pain,” he said. “The days I have trouble running are when I’m running alone—trying to stay motivated in the cold and dark.”

The runs attract dozens of runners of all ages and ability levels, and starts at three miles, store manager Jim O’Hara said.

On Monday, Dec. 10, the run will be particularly special for him. It’s will be a celebration of the San Diego Company’s 35^th anniversary. The company’s first store opened in Mission Beach and expanded to the Lumberyard in Encinitas in 1995.

“Since the day we started, it’s been home,” O’Hara said. “We’ve been fortunate to be involved in the community and accepted by the community and we’ve really felt embraced the whole time we’ve been up here.”

Pope—who has been running for nearly three decades—said he frequents the store because it has always been a big supporter of the running community.

“They provide a product that is really geared towards runners,” he said.

Starting at 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, the store will feature vendors such companies as Adidas, PowerBar and Run Goo. The run will start at 6 p.m. After burning calories, attendees will celebrate the store’s birthday appropriately—with cake.
