Foodie Amor Bakery Opening in Leucadia

Confections will be made "the old-fashioned way" with all-natural ingredients and no preservatives, says owner Christine Miller.

You’ll soon be able to smell dark chocolate almond biscottis baking on Coast Highway 101 in Leucadia.

Foodie Amor is slated to open a small bakery there within a couple months, and that’s just one of the signature menu items you’ll be able to find.

In addition to biscottis, owner Christine Miller says she plans to bake all sorts of cookies, brownies, bars, sweetbreads, and seasonal candies—all made with natural ingredients and no preservatives, or “the old fashioned way,” she says.

“I think people don’t realize how many preservatives are in a lot of the food that they eat,” Miller says. “But they won’t find any of that here.”

Case in point: Her signature shortbread cookies are topped with pink frosting that gets its rosy color from beets, not dye. Her love of natural food took root early on at her family’s farm in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. There, her parents took great pride in working the land and taught her how to cook using all that fresh produce. She “was a foodie before it was popular,” she says.

Miller inherited a knack for baking from both of her grandmothers, and had conjured up her first signature cookie by age 10. She went on to study food sciences at California State University Fresno, and worked as a microbiologist before deciding to follow her heart and launch her own baking company.

Her confections have already earned a following at local Nordstrom Espresso Cafes—and locally at , , and Solana Beach Coffee Company.

She’s now hoping to win over more locals with her 800-square-foot bakery, which will offer some organic options, like the peanut butter chocolate chunk cookie— and some vegan options, like the sporty bar, which is chockfull of oats, almonds, pecans, cranberries, raisins, coconut, flaxseed and organic agave. Some gluten-free options are in the works, too.

If you drop in to the bakery, you may notice a contraption mounted on the wall, which appears to be a bright pink elliptical machine. That’s actually her Street Strider, which her husband Kevin sells via his company. He’ll be on hand at the bakery as well, and has been known to take interested customers on test drives down Vulcan Avenue.

“After all, you have to work off some of those treats,” Miller jokes.

Foodie Amor is at 918 N. Coast Highway 101. Miller is waiting to finalize paperwork, and as of press time, did not have an exact opening date—though she says she anticipates it will be within the next two months at most. Patch will keep you posted as more information becomes available.
