On May 2, at La Costa Heights elementary school, the Encinitas Union School District will be holding the Math 24  tournament, "Math Made Fun!"

Math 24 is a game that is played outside of the classroom. The benefits are amazing.  It enhances problem solving, pattern sensing and critical thinking. One side benefit to the game,  it improves faster problem solving. I have witnessed this in my own child. It is a game that can be played anywhere.  I have seen children "flipping" cards in the car, at lunch, at home- just about everywhere. The mathematics tournament has been in  existence for eight years.

The tournament has about one hundred participants and over two hundred proud parents, teachers and friends - cheering in attendance. This year we have six schools participating:  El Camino Creek, Flora Vista, La Costa Heights, Mission Entancia, Park Dale Lane and Paul Ecke Central.

Now, what is Math 24?Math 24 is a game that consists of 48 cards in a deck. Each card has four numbers on it. The idea is to arrive at 24 with these numbers. The children must use all four numbers in any  mathematical  equation- add, subtract, multiply and divide.  Four children participate at one table. The first child to solve the problem, touch the card and explain how they arrived at 24-wins!Children, now, are gearing up for the competition. Moms and dads are "flipping" cards.  Many children practice every day, but any one can play and strengthen their math skills.  Come out and watch or have your child sign up at their school and participate. We still need prizes for the children.  Raffles will be drawn between rounds.

If you can contribute a gift card, age appropriate prizes or money that can be used to purchase snacks and/ or prizes-for these hard working children- it is greatly appreciated. In recognition of your contribution, your business will receive a " thank you" in the Math 24 Tournament Program, as well as a "shout- out" during the Math 2nd tournament. Thank you for supporting Math 24.
