Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day

Today is Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day, a chance to enjoy your favorite funky flavors without spending a penny. And, yes, there's one near you!

From noon to 8 p.m., Ben and Jerry's ice cream shops will be giving away free ice cream cones. The scoop shop at the Sherman Oaks Galleria, at 15301 Ventura Blvd., is the nearest location to Encino.

The annual promotion started in 1979 and has provided small cones for free every year since as a way to thank customers for their support. While the cones are free (limit one per customer), the ice cream giveaway often collects donations benefiting a number of charities.

At the Sherman Oaks shop, donations will benefit the American Cancer Society.

Chunky Monkey, Triple Caramel Chunk and Phish Food are the tried-and-true favorites. This year's new flavors include Late Night Snack, a sweet and salty flavor combo inspired by Jimmy Fallon, and Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream, which is packed with vanilla ice cream, fudge-covered waffle cone pieces and a caramel swirl.
