500-Pound Pig Rescued From California Wildfire

The family pet made it out of the Lilac Fire in San Diego County without any fire-related injuries.

ESCONDIDO, CA -- Among the thousands of living beings that were evacuated from a fire that scorched the northern region of San Diego County was a pig estimated to be around 400 to 500 pounds. The family pet was evacuated during the Lilac Fire, which sparked in Bonsall last Thursday, before making its way westward toward Oceanside.

A spokeswoman with the county of San Diego said the family pet is currently being housed at the Escondido Humane Society where he was examined by a veterinarian. The pig escaped the fire without any injuries related to the disaster.

The Lilac Fire is one of six wildfires to burn in Southern California in recent days. It forced the evacuation of thousands of people, burned 4,100 acres and destroyed 182 structures. As of Monday morning, it was 80 percent contained.

Elsewhere in Southern California, the Thomas Fire continued to scorched through Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. As of Monday, it was 230,500 acres and only 15 percent contained.
