Answer: Where Is This Bridge Located?

We asked the question, you answered and now we retort.

Sunday we put Fair Oaks readers to task coming up with the correct location of that existed in the area long ago.

Many readers offered their best guess as to its location, and a couple were correct. But there can be only one correct answer, and to that, it must be  who guessed first.

Frank correctly guessed the picture was, "the original Fair Oaks Bridge completed in 1901, washed out in 1907, then rebuilt. Now at the end of Bridge Street."

Historian James Pearce may have said something similar.

"If you said 'across the American River at Fair Oaks', you'd be fairly close," Pearce said in an e-mail.

The photo is of the original Fair Oaks bridge which washed out in the flood of 1907.

The wreckage can be seen in this photo, Pearce said.

"It's probably still downstream from the new (and current) Fair Oaks bridge buried in the silt and cobble," Pearce said.

There is no documentation of any of it being salvaged. For more history of the Fair Oaks bridges, check out the bottom of the home page of the Fair Oaks Historical Society (www.fairoakshistory.org).
