Del Campo Car Accident Not Considered a Hit and Run

The boy was uninjured in the accident.

Updated:

The car accident that occurred Monday at Del Campo High School has been since redefined and is no longer being considered a hit and run. In fact, it never was considered a hit and run.

After speaking with California Highway Patrol spokeswoman, Liz Dutton, it was discovered the 17-year-old girl who struck the 14-year-old boy outside the school never attempted to flee the scene, but lost control of her vehicle and stopped in the middle of the Dewey Avenue.

According to the CHP report, the girl attempted to circumvent stopped cars when she moved from the right-turn-only lane exiting Del Campo into the left-turn-only lane. When she attempted to turn left from the right lane she struck the boy who was crossing the street with the right-of-way.

"She passed traffic and wanted to make a left turn," Dutton said.

Dutton explained any reasons for the initial hit and run report might have had to do with the boy's initial response to run which may have been misunderstood when the initial report was cited on the CHP website.

"After he was hit, the boy was scared and ran - a flight or fight type of response," Dutton said.

No formal charges have been filed against the girl, but Dutton said she is responsible for the accident.

The boy was transported to the hospital as an emergency medical response protocal, but was uninjured in the accident, Dutton said.

Original story:

A Del Campo High School Student was the victim of an attempted hit and run car accident Monday around 3:02 p.m., according to school officials and information gathered from the California Highway Patrol.

Though information is limited at this time, it appears the juvenile pedestrian was sitting near the side of the road when, what is being described by the CHP website as, a silver sedan attempted to pass the reporting party on the sidewalk and hit the juvenile on the sidewalk.

The CHP report indicates that the juvenile made an attempt to flee the scene after being hit, but was detained until medical response teams were able to arrive, said Sacramento Metro Fire assistant chief Scott Cockrum.

Cockrum explained the juvenile was taken to Mercy San Juan Hospital with unknown injuries.

According to the CHP report the silver sedan then came to a stop in the center divide along Dewey Avenue. The driver's side window of the car was broken out, according to the report.

The status of the driver is unknown at this time.
