Carmichael Welcome Sign Unveiled

Residents and visitors entering Carmichael on Arden Way from the west will notice a new welcome sign, unveiled Friday at the intersection of Mission Avenue.

The concrete monument sign was presented during a ceremony hosted by and the Sacramento County Department of Transportation.

Peters and county transportation officials met previously with members of . The result was a $1.3 million project on Arden from Eastern Avenue to Fair Oaks Boulevard that includes a traffic signal and sidewalk and bike lane additions, said Myriam Frausto, an associate civil engineer with the county.

The project was funded by a federal grant and gas tax money, Frausto said.

"There was a critical need for this light to occur," said Dewey Willis, a community organizer and vice-president of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church congregation. "This is a true milestone for this community."

A round oak leaf and acorn medallion at the top of the sign symbolizes oak trees found in Carmichael, said Jim Schubert, a senior landscape architect with the county.

The sign reads "Carmichael Est. 1909," from the first officially recognized establishment date of the Carmichael colony by .

A blue wave pattern on the sign and a cobble river stone at the base represent the American river, Schubrt said.

"We wanted to have a classic looking sign with modern features to represent the past, present and future of Carmichael," he said.

The project cost about $9,500 paid for by Measure A salex tax funds, Schubert said.
