Community Forum to Discuss Sturgis Homicide

The meeting will happen Wednesday at St. Mel's Church beginning at 6 p.m.

Community members will have a chance to discuss their concerns and voice any questions related to the recent homicide of Carole Sturgis at a forum inside , beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The meeting will take place inside the church's Doheny Hall.

Members from Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Neighborhood Crimes Prevention unit will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about the investigation.

Sheriff's Department assistant commander, Lt. Greg Maples explained after receiving a number of questions related to the crime, the decision was made to hold the forum.

"We are hoping to have Cpt. Brelje of centralized investigations and Sgt. Jim Barnes from the Homicide Bureau there," Maples said.

Maples said the forum would address:

  • Sharing what information Sheriff's Department official can.
  • Answer community questions.
  • Address safety concerns they may have.

Maples explained some questions initially had to do with the initial response, Sheriff's investigation methodology.

"It boiled down to a situation that doesn't occurr often in that type of community, so we're hoping to bring a little closure and normalcy back to the community," Maples said.

Sturgis' body was found after neighbors called in a report of a man, later identified as , forcibly entering surrounding homes. Witnesses say Trotter was last seen running toward Sturgis' home. When deputies arrived at Olympic Way home, Trotter walked outside, naked and covered in blood.
