Did Fair Oaks Skip National Night Out?

Last night fliers were posted in neighborhoods explaining planned National Night Out events had been canceled due to a lack of attendees.

Last night, homes in neighborhoods nationwide opened their doors, inviting neighbors and friends to attend barbecues, swimming parties and ice cream socials all with the intention to observe National Night Out and promote local crime prevention.

That was the case for many areas (check out some of the coverage and ) across Sacramento. Except it wasn't as prolific in Fair Oaks.

We can't speak for every home in Fair Oaks. Of the four homes we visited that were listed by Sacramento County Sheriff's Department as those holding an event, only one had an actual event taking place.

Upon further investigation, though, it was reported the home opted to cancel its event due to a lack of attendees. 

In some cases, scheduled events didn't take place at all and with no posted explanation, it left some to wonder why.

We thought we'd pose the question to readers.

Does National Night Out really prevent crime? Are people too busy to attend these types of social gatherings? Or worse, do people simply not care about this type of social awareness?
