El Camino HS Student President Keeps Busy

Katrina Romo is also head cheerleader.

Whereas most students can enjoy a summer vacation, Katrina Romo kept busy through the summer between her junior and senior years at .

In April, the El Camino cheerleading team held its tryouts and elections, at which Romo was named head of the varsity cheer squad. All summer long, the girls held cheer practices and attended camps.

Also during last school year, Romo was elected student body president.

"My year never really ended," she said.

Romo has been planning for Homecoming weekend Sept. 23-24, which includes a game and dance as well as a trip for her and some of her fellow cheerleaders to the in New York City, the Senior Ball in May and a senior trip to Disneyland in the spring.

"Things have been going smoothly," Romo said, denying any conflicts between her presidential and cheer duties. "There's an overlap sometimes because I am in charge of spirit and leadership events."

Romo said it was her goal to lead both student government and cheerleading for the Eagles.

"It's also my time to enjoy being a senior," she said.

Romo said she felt welcomed at El Camino after coming from St. Ignatius School in the Arden area.

"My favorite thing about (El Camino) is that there's a group for everyone," she said. "It's an accepting school."

Romo said she is looking at colleges in Southern California, with the University of San Diego as one option. She said she would like to major in psychology.

"I'm geared to helping others," Romo said.
