El Camino Wrestling A Family Affair

Athletes like to say their team is like a family and that may be true but for the wrestling squad, it's more literal.

Two brother pairs are on the Eagles team- Ernie and Emmanuel Armas and Matt and Mike Kintz.

El Camino is looking to repeat as Capital Athletic League champions.

"I expect us to defend our title," said Ernie Armas, who said his best result so far this season was third place in the Marty Manges Tournament at Casa Roble.

El Camino wrestling coach Victor Sanchez, who also coaches the team, said his wrestlers have not had a full lineup due to injuries and have seen some kids bumping up in weight classes.

CC Sigler, a freshman, is the lone girl on the team and has had two second place finishes at varsity girls tournaments. She had also fought against boys.

"It's hard being the only girl on an all-boys team but I enjoy wrestling," said Sigler, who last year took second place at the girls middle school state wrestling championships when she was at Arden Middle School.

The Eagles defeated Cordova on Wednesday by a score of 58-15, which included six forfeits. Next up, El Camino hosts a tournament with 20 schools competing on Saturday.

Other possible state qualifiers for the Eagles are Anton Hollins and Eric Thomas.

"If we finish Top 5 in our division, I'll be happy," Sanchez said.

He credited assistant wrestling coach Alan Blomquist with helping the team improve each meet.
