Fair Oaks Residents Do Not Want Assembly District Lines Redrawn

The Citizens Redistricting Commission of California will take the last public comments before making final decisions to redraw assembly district lines.

The Fair Oaks Chamber of Commerce, along with many of its members, and residents have let it be known they do not want their community's Assembly District lines redefined in a way that would take them out of Sacramento County.

In an effort to raise awareness of the issue, Chamber representatives drafted a letter for locals.

Fair Oaks Patch presents the letter unedited.

ALERT - Fair Oaks Residents:

This week the Redistricting Commission will take the last public comment before directing its staff to draw final Assembly district lines. Fair Oaks residents voiced loudly our opinion that Fair Oaks is a Sacramento Conty community and should not be districted into Placer County. The Commission staff responded by drawing a map that put Fair Oaks back into the Sacramento County Assembly seat. But one week later they reversed that; we are back in the Placer County seat. Fair Oaks should not be in a district where Sacramento County residents make up only 20 percent of the voters. The vast majority of voters will have Placer County priorities, which are much different than ours.

We have one last chance to try to have our voices heard. It is VERY EASY to send the Commission a comment by clicking on the ink below. It can be as short as one or two sentences. Tell the Commission something about yourself: how long you have lived in Fair Oaks, what organizations you participate in, what schools your kids attend. Then urge them to move Fair Oaks back into the Sacramento County Assembly seat.

Please take a minute to send a comment today! http://wedrawthelines.ca.gov/contact.html (Region 9, Sacramento). Comments need to be to the Commission by the end of the day this Thursday, July 21.

After you do that, please forward this email to your Fair Oaks neighbors and friends. Let's make our voices heard!

Reasons that Fair Oaks should be in the Eastern Sacramento County Assembly District

  • Fair Oaks has much more in common with its neighboring communitities of Carmichael, Citrus Heights and Rancho Cordova. We are not in a "community of interest' with Roseville, Rocklin, Loomis and Lincoln.
  • Fair Oaks is represented by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors and served by the San Juan Unified School District and SMUD. We are served by no Placer County agencies.
  • Fair Oaks is distant from Placer County, unlike the other Sacramento County communities the Commission has drawn into the Placer Assembly seat (Folsom and Orangevale both sit on the Placer County border and therefore could be seen as having more in common).
  • Fair Oaks residents travel Highway 50. We take Highway 50 or light rail to jobs downtown.
  • Fair Oaks shares common interests with the American River Parkway communities.
  • The Commission drew a Congressional district that keeps Fair Oaks with the rest of Sacramento County, determining that is our appropriate "community of interest". There is no reason to put in a different area in the Assembly maps.
