Girl Scouts Clean Up Deterding Elementary

Troop 1637 to clean school the last Tuesday of every month.

A Carmichael troop helped clean up the campus on Tuesday.

Troop 1637, assisted by Cub Scout Pack 281 of Gold River and other Deterding students, picked up trash around the Stanley Avenue campus as part of their community service. Among the items they found was styrofoam, candy wrappers and cigarette butts.

"It's important to clean up to keep people healthy," said Girl Scout Kailey Hall, 7, a second grade student at Deterding.

Troop leader Stephanie Baker said the cleanup is open to all members of the Deterding community. Parent participation is mandatory.

"We consider the school to be our community," said Baker, who cleaned with her children Azul, 10; Nyla, 7 and Emil, 3.

Parents say the volunteer cleanup efforts are needed now more than ever.

"With district cutbacks, schools cannot afford to stay on top of things," said Beth Hatch.

The cleanups will continue the last Tuesday of every month. There will be no cleanups in November and December due to holiday breaks. The next cleanup is scheduled for Jan. 31.
