Jesuit Graduates Reflect, Look Ahead

added 263 graduates to its ranks of alumni Saturday following the Carmichael school's 45th Commencement Exercises in Sacramento.

The graduates, wearing Jesuit red caps and gowns filed into the Memorial Auditorium at about 10 a.m. as proud family members and friends shouted words of encouragement and took pictures.

, the Class of 2011's valedictorian who will attend Harvard University in the fall where he will major in mathematics, told the audience 2011 is the first prime year since 2003 and the sum of 11 consecutive prime numbers.

Eur reminded his classmates of their many successes including the team winning the Fr. Barry Classic tournament, the football team winning the annual Holy Bowl matchup against rival Christian Brothers, performing at Carnegie Hall, the soccer team winning the section championship and the Science Olympiad tying for third in a big meet. He also thanked his father who was in the family's native Korea and could not attend Saturday's graduation and his fellow graduates.

"Thank you guys," Eur said. "I am indebted for all the memories you have given me."

Earlier, salutatorian Corbin Ellard led the audience in an invocation.

"Let each and every brother in the Class of 2011... be able to lean on each other when needed," said Ellard, who will attend the University of Alabama.

Jesuit school leaders praised the graduates.

Jesuit president The Rev. Greg Bonfiglio SJ asked Jesuit alumni who were in the audience to stand and he told the graduates they would soon be joining them and about 8,000 alumni who are men of competence and compassion for others.

"These letters behind me, AMDG, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, meaning "For the Greater Glory of God" are a way to measure your actions," said Bonfiglio, who is . "You are always Marauders and you will always have a home at 1200 Jacob Lane; these 51 acres have been your home for four years."

Principal Brianna Latko said she will miss the students.

"We are proud of these youg men for their accomplishments and excited for their journeys ahead," Latko said.

Finally, the graduates took the stage one by one, from Daniel Clifford Abrams to Jeremiah Thomas Ziebert. Some will stay local at schools including the California State University, Sacramento; the University of California, Davis and . Others will attend schools such as Stanford and Princeton while others will attend Jesuit universities including Georgetown, Santa Clara and the University of San Francisco.

Bonfiglio was awarded an honorary diploma.

After the ceremony, graduates posed for pictures outside with each other and their families and friends.

"It hasn't really hit me yet (that I've graduated but it's nice to be with family and friends," said Tomas Riegos. "There's no comparing what Jesuit gives (students); Jesuit focuses on the individual student so everyone grows."

As the minutes went by, amid a sea of red caps and gowns, it appeared that the graduates were not in a hurry to leave.
