Lady Broncos Aim To Extend A Luncheon Playoff Tradition

Five years strong, and Bella Vista's girls' varsity basketball team is still enjoying their ritual luncheon tradition.

After five years in the playoffs, a team can start to develop some traditions. Take for example, Bella Vista’s lady Broncos varsity basketball team. Before the Broncos host Benicia High School Thursday night, they will sit down together for a pregame lunch that afternoon, relax, enjoy some quality time together and have some fun.

Broncos head coach Gwyn Jackson likes to switch up the traditions during playoff season.

“This is our fifth year in the playoffs with a one through four seed,” Jackson said in an email. “The girls have also had 20-plus game wins in the past five years going into playoffs.”

Tomorrow’s lunch menu will likely consist of some sort of carbohydrate/protein combination – maybe chicken and pasta, Jackson said.

Jackson believes the lunches help alleviate nerves after a long day of school and homework. It also gives the girls a chance to talk about other things on their minds, besides basketball.

“It will be at Jennifer Johnson’s house,” she said. “We don’t talk about basketball. We get there, relax and just bond. I want them to enjoy themselves and keep their minds off the game.”
