The American River presents many hazards from strong currents and cold water to rope swings and bridge abutments. As the weather warms and swimmers and rafters congregate to the river, highlighting known danger areas can help those looking for some fun in the sun stay safe.

Sacramento Metro Fire District Assistant Chief Walter White explained though many of the locations are known for their dangers, it's a risk many are willing to take.

"The San Juan Rapids are an area of concern as well as a small island area near Hagan Park where rafters congregate to party and often get involved in physical altercations or just rough-housing with each other," White said.

Rafters should avoid the unsafe practice of lashing several rafts together, White said. This practice has resulted in rafts overturning and getting snagged on obstacles. "The main thing rafters should do is wear a life vest and avoid consuming alcohol while on the river," White said. "If you are drinking alcohol and not wearing a life vest, it is not a matter of 'if' but just a question of 'when' you will get into trouble."
