Mira Loma, Churchill Students Win Science Olympiad

Carmichael-area schools head to nationals in May.

Students from  and  finished first in their respective divisions in the Northern California State Science Olympiad on Saturday in Visalia, officials from both schools announced.

Carmichael's took 4th place, said Churchill coach Jeff Jungk. finished sixth in their division, officials announced.

It was the eighth straight title for Mira Loma and second consecutive for .

Every Mira Loma team member received at least one medal and as a team, they took home almost half the gold medals in the individual events, school officials said. In addition, no individual event was lower than seventh place out of 24 teams; previously Mira Loma had never had a state tournament where every event was in the top ten.

This win allows the team to move onto nationals being held in Orlando, Fla. on May 19. The team wants to maintain it's streak of three consecutives top ten finishes nationally, school officials said.

Churchill's team consists of five Mira Loma freshmen (9th graders can compete on either team).
