Rio Americano Girls Tennis Seeks Improvement

Raiders look for winning season.

The girls tennis team is looking to rebuild after eight seniors this past spring.

"The season has been going well so far but we're a rebuilding team," said junior Taylor Coggeshall.

The team may be young but the girls do have some playing experience under their belts, said Raiders tennis coach Maureen Bennett.

"We have had a challenging pre-season," Bennett said. "We start our first league matches this week and should be a competitive in league play."

Alexa Heinzer is one of the tennis team's seniors. She also helped lead the team to the last spring.

"As a (tennis) team, we get along well and cheer each other on," Heinzer said. "I think we have a chance to win our section; we look pretty strong."

Mira Loma looms as Rio's toughest league opponents when the teams face off in October.

"Those will be some close matches but I think we'll do well," said sophomore Lexi Goldwyn.

Rio's coach said she likes her team's chances.

"What we have is an enthusiastic, welcoming, encouraging group of girls who enjoy being around each other and have a love for the game," Bennett said. "I believe this team can win a lot of matches and will improve with every match. We should end up with a winning season."
