Rio Americano HS to Have Pancakes and Politics,E-Waste Collection on Saturday

Rio Americano High School will host two fundraisers Saturday: a and an electronic waste collection.

The Civitas Academy at Rio will be having its annual "Pancakes N' Politics" breakfast starting at 8 a.m. at the school located at 4540 American River Dr. Speakers at the fundraising event include Assemblywoman Alison Huber and Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones.

Tickets are $7. Funds help pay for textbooks, field trips, leadership conferences and more.

The Civitas Academy is a four-year program that teaches students about government and encourages them to participate in their communites.

"Civitas is a political studies academy we've had for 18 years at Rio," said program coordinator Linda Reed. "(Our speakers) will discuss why it's important to get out and vote and be an active citizen."

The e-waste collection will be held in Rio's parking lot by the baseball field from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants can drive through and volunteers will unload your donation.

The following items will be accepted: monitors, televisions, desktop and notebook PCs, VCRs, stereo equipment, speakers, keyboards, computer mouses, PDAs, digital cameras, zip drives, telephones, cell phones, printers, copiers, laser and multifunction scanners and fax machines.

The following items will not be accepted: household appliances (i.e. refrigerators, washers, dryers, etc.), furniture, hazardous household waste including batteries, car batteries, paint, pesticides, used oil, cleaning supplies, fluorescent light bulbs, tires, etc.
