San Juan Unified Superintendent to Retire

Jaurequi will retire Aug. 30.

The superintendent of the will retire this summer, district officials announced today.

Pat Jaurequi, who has led San Juan Unified since 2008, will retire effective Aug. 30.

“I am intensely proud of the work that has been accomplished and the team that has been built in San Juan during the last three years,” Jaurequi said in a released statement. “We have become a school district with a greater appreciation and use of data in daily decision making, a school district of targeted professional development and a school district that maintains its focus on improving teaching and learning.”

Jaurequi’s husband will also retire this summer and the couple plans to spend the next year focused on travel and their three grandchildren, district officials said.

“Our strong preference would be to keep Dr. Jaurequi for many more years, but, we wish her all the best in retirement and thank her from the bottom of our hearts for her contribution to San Juan schools and our community,” school board president Lucinda Luttgen said in a released statement. “The Board is committed to ensuring that the powerful work and the momentum built in the last three years is not lost. We will be looking for a candidate that can ensure we continue on our course to educate and inspire each student to succeed and contribute to our radically evolving world.”

The district board of education will meet on Wednesday to discuss what type of search for a new superintendent will take place, said district spokesman Trent Allen. Possibilities include looking internally or running a full selection and screening process open to external candidates as well.
