Students Caught Making Chemical Explosions at MLHS

No injuries, students will face disciplinary action.

Four students at Mira Loma High School were caught this morning making chemical explosions on the school campus, fire and officials said.

At about 7:30 a.m., the students were on the school's running track causing chemical reactions in water bottles to make them explode, causing a loud noise, said district spokesman Trent Allen.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Asst. Chief Scott Cockrum called the devices chemical bombs and said they were made with Drano and aluminum foil.

"We find them in people's metal mailboxes and they're strong enough to blow up the metal mailboxes," Cockrum said.

No injuries were reported and the school was not placed on lockdown or evacuated, Allen said.

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the scene and the minors were charged with a felony crime for the incident, Cockrum said.

A hazardous materials crew cleaned the area up and the school day resumed as usual, Allen said.

The students will face disciplinary action, he said.
