Then & Now: Where Was This Classic Photo Taken?
A look back at Fair Oaks' historical landmarks and landscapes.

It was probably 1905 when this picture was taken, said Fair Oaks historian Jim Pearce.
Can you guess where it is? Pearce certainly can. But he's not giving it away - not yet anyway.
"It's almost certainly by Dr. Eugene Buffum, one of the first physicians in Fair Oaks," Pearce said.

Dr. Buffum specialized in eyes and ears and identified himself as an "occulist", Pearce explained.
"Being interested in lenses, he took naturally to photography and left us with many of the very early photos of Fair Oaks," Pearce said.

The surrey with the fringe on top belonged to George Straith, a Chicago clothier who came to Fair Oaks in 1900 to retire and grow citrus. He built one of the fancier homes on the bluffs, which still exists.
