1 Killed, Others Injured After Vehicle Hits Pole; Driver Possibly Arrested

Stretch of MacArthur Boulevard in Santa Ana to be closed into afternoon.

SANTA ANA, CA – A possibly impaired SUV driver slammed the vehicle into a pole in Santa Ana today, killing one passenger, critically injuring another and landing the motorist in police custody.

The Subaru Forester crashed about 8:30 a.m. as it was being driven westbound on MacArthur Boulevard just east of Bristol Street, according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

"We believe they were going at a high rate of speed," Bertagna said. "For some reason (the driver) lost control of the vehicle, it went up on the sidewalk and hit a light pole, shearing the light pole, and continued another 100-plus feet where the vehicle came to rest."
