Allen Elementary Named National Blue Ribbon School

The award reflects the school's consistently high performance over the past 5 years.

 on Thursday was one of 21 California schools to be named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School.

"Being chosen as a National Blue Ribbon School is validation of the unified efforts by our outstanding students, teachers, support staff, and parents to maintain student learning and achievement growth as the priorities at Allen Elementary School,” Allen Principal Andrew Heughins said. "This wonderful news is a testament to their work and commitment, and is an great way to start off the new school year."

The Blue Ribbon program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, recognizes schools that are either academically superior or demonstrate dramatic gains in student performance while narrowing gaps in achievement especially among disadvantaged and minority students. Allen school meet both standards for the Blue Ribbon.

With an enrollment of more than 800 children, 30 percent of Allen students are classified as English learners, 69 percent come from households where a second language is spoken, and more than one-third qualify for free or discounted school meals.

Heughins and one teacher from Allen will join the 304 nationwide winners honored with a plaque and Blue Ribbon flag at the recognition ceremony Nov. 14 and 15 in Washington. DC.
