Sometimes, the best way to make a win look easy is by working really hard. That's exactly what the Fountain Valley girls' basketball team did Tuesday night in a 44-35 Sunset League win over Newport Harbor.
"It was just a great win," Barons coach Sake Takemoto said. "We needed a win, and we got one tonight."
The Barons were down early in the game, trailing 14-9 after the first quarter. But Fountain Valley stormed back in the second quarter, taking a 23-19 lead into halftime and stretching the lead throughout the second half with some relentless defense. The Barons completely negated Newport's significant size advantage by denying passes into the paint, daring the Sailors to shoot from long-range and then controlling the glass.

"We really worked on that," Takemoto said. "Our strategy was nothing in the paint. Overall, we did well. The things we practiced, we applied them in the game."
Senior Leslie La led the Barons with 13 points. Fountain Valley finally gets its first home game Thursday against Los Alamitos.
