Harman's State Parks Bill Passes Committee
The bill would encourage cash-strapped parks to seek alternate sources of funding before deciding to shut down
A bill aimed at helping 70 of California's state parks avoid closure passed the assembly's committee on water, parks and wildlife last week.
The bill, sponsored by Republican State Sen. Tom Harman, whose district includes Fountain Valley, would require any park slated for closure to provide 30 days' public notice on the California Department of Parks and Recreation website. The bill would also encourage parks to seek alternate sources of funding by providing information on how interested parties can contact the department negotiate for a contract to lease, operate, maintain or provide concessions at that park. The department would also be required to respond in writing to any inquires received.
"SB 386 continues to move through the legislative process—a clear indication that members of both political parties want to see a healthy, open park system in California," Harman said. "It adds some transparency to the bureaucratic process that I believe will clear a path for partnerships with nonprofit, private or local entities and ultimately keep more parks open."
