Los Amigos Hangs on for 24-21 Win Over Godinez
The Lobos moved to 2-0 behind big games from senior quarterback Danny Hernandez and junior running back Jerry Saldivar.
Junior running back Jerry Saldivar rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown, and senior quarterback Danny Hernandez passed for a touchdown and ran for another as Los Amigos moved to 2-0 with a 24-21 win Friday night over Godinez at Garden Grove High.
"It feels great; first time in my career we're 2-0--out of the gate 2-0," Lobos Head Coach Carl Agnew said. "I know they're going to start feeling pretty confident and pretty happy. It's is a different position than we've been in in the past. We've usually struggled in non-league, and now we're starting to find it. We're 2-0, and we're just building off of this."
The Lobos trailed 7-0 after the first quarter, but on the first play of the second quarter, Hernandez hit Anthony Magana in the left flat and Magana did the rest, taking it in for a 21-yard touchdown and tying the game. After a Godinez punt, the Lobos drove the length of the field once again, capping the drive on a 7-yard touchdown run by Saldivar.

The Grizzlies put together a touchdown-scoring drive at the end of the second quarter, but missed the extra point try, allowing Los Amigos to take a 14-13 lead into halftime. The Lobos took the opening kick of the second half and drove the length of the field, converting on two key third downs. Hernandez finished the drive with a quarterback sneak from one yard out to put the Lobos up 21-13.
Los Amigos were driving again later in the third quarter until a botched snap deep in Godinez territory put the Lobos back to almost midfield. a pass interference penalty gave Los Amigos a fresh set of downs, and although the Lobos were unable to score, they were able to flip field position and pin the Grizzlies deep in their own end.

Los Amigos took its 21-13 lead into the fourth, but Godinez put together an impressive drive and looked to get in the end zone on a third down pass play, but Hernandez jarred the ball loose with a huge hit. The Grizzlies were forced to settle for a field goal attempt, but a mishandled snap led to a turnover on downs.
Los Amigos added a 29-yard field goal by Frankie Valdez in the fourth, cashing in on an interception by Leonard Zambrano. Penalties kept the Lobos from turning the pick into a touchdown, and penalties down the stretch negated other big plays, including an 80-plus-yard run by Saldivar that would have locked the game away. Godinez took advantage of the extra chances, putting together a scoring drive and cutting the lead to three at 24-21 with just under a minute to play. But the Grizzlies' recovery of an onside kick was negated by a penalty, and Los Amigos took a knee to run out the rest of the clock.
The Lobos try to make it three in a row next Thursday when they take on Loara at Garden Grove High.
