1,300 Gallons Of Gasoline Spills After Car Hits Pump In Pasadena

PASADENA, CA — Hazardous materials cleanup crews worked into the night to deal with a large gasoline spill into the Alhambra wash that moved south toward San Marino and the gasoline smell had passed this morning.

As of 5:40 a.m. Monday Pasadena spokeswoman Lisa Derderian told City News Service Los Angeles County officials were monitoring the spill but that the smell dissipated.

It all started at 3:17 p.m. Sunday when Pasadena firefighters were called to the Union 76 gas station at Glenarm Street and Arroyo Seco Parkway after a vehicle crashed into a gasoline pump, Derderian said.

An emergency shutoff valve malfunctioned and the power was cut to the building, she said. About 1,300 gallons of unleaded gasoline leaked out.

Pasadena and Los Angeles County Hazmat units arrived at the scene to handle the cleanup, she said. L.A. County Public Works crews were tasked with handling flood maintenance outside the city limits.

Alhambra police said the spill left a lingering gas smell, which was expected to dissipate sometime late Sunday night or early this morning.

Residents near the spill sites were advised to stay inside their residences with the windows and doors closed, Derderian said.

Broadcast video from the scene this morning showed the gas station open for business.
