Ash Wednesday: Churches Hosting Ash Wednesday Services

Signifying the beginning of the Lent season, the 46 days before Easter, many Christian churches are observing Ash Wednesday, Feb. 13.

According to St. Dorothy’s Catholic Church in Glendora, Lent is described as a time for spiritual renewal and a time to focus on activities that promote a closer relationship with God.

Churches host services on Ash Wednesday where the sign of the cross is made on worshippers’ foreheads with ashes. For many Christians, this symbolizes repentance and purification. This practice is common among several Christian denominations, including Catholics, Anglicans, Methodists, Lutherans and some Baptists.

It is also common practice during the Lent season to give up an activity or to take on a service, and to give up meat on Fridays and on days of fast – Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
