Bear Pays Visit to Glendora Neighborhood

Bear sightings are not unusual in neighborhoods closer to the Glendora mountains, and Friday night’s sighting was no exception.

Residents at North Banna and Sierra Madre avenues reported seeing a bear roaming their neighborhood late Friday night. According to calls, the bear was seen standing in the street and poking around properties.

Glendora Police responded to the scene at around 10:30 p.m., but the bear headed back to the wilderness on its own, according to police.

Black bear sightings are common in the Sierra Madre area. Glendora Police advises residents to keep their distance from bears, who often roam the areas at night.

Police provided the following tips to avoid a dangerous encounter with a bear:

• Securing bags of trash inside cans stored in a garage or other secure area, and placing the cans outside, as late as possible, on trash pick-up days – not the night before.

• Purchasing bear-proof garbage cans or bear proofing your existing garbage container with a secure latching system.

• Discontinuing the feeding of wild birds during spring and summer, even with feeders, Bears are attracted to seed that spills on the ground.

• Avoiding “free feeding” pets outdoors. If you must feed pets outdoors, make sure all food is consumed and empty bowls are removed.

• Cleaning all food and grease from barbecue grills after each use. Bears are attracted to food odors and may investigate.
