Local Makes Documentary About Route 66

San Gabriel Valley Resident and filmmaker John McDonald will be highlighting the Mother Road in his latest documentary, Pipes & Sticks on Route 66, which he plans to start filming in April. 

He'll be following five bagpipers and drummers from around the country in their quest to perform along the historic street. First stop will be Chicago with the tour ending in Santa Monica. A portion of Route 66 runs through Glendora, although Mcdonald said he is unsure if Glendora will make it onto the final cut of the documentary, "especially since so many great bagpipers are Glendora High School graduates" and much of what is filmed "ends up on the cutting room floor."

Mcdonald writes:

U.S. Highway 66—popularly known as Route 66 or the Mother Road—holds a special place in American consciousness and evokes images of simpler times, mom and pop businesses, and the icons of a mobile nation on the road. Running through the nation’s heartland from Chicago to Santa Monica, the legendary road passes through many picturesque places, including my own home town, South Pasadena, California.

The group will stop in Pasadena. You can expect:

• PUB CRAWL on Colorado Blvd in Old Pasadena April 20
• WORKSHOP noon to 4 p.m. for pipers & drummers April 21.
• CONCERT at Westminster Presbyterian Church April 21.
