‘Don’t Waste L.A.’ Trash Hauling Presentation at HHPNC Meeting

Tonight's agenda also includes a discussion and possible support for an environmental group's City Council-backed plan to award franchises to commercial trash hauling companies.

The Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council is scheduled to hold its monthly board meeting today, Thursday, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Highland Park Adult Senior Citizen Center.

Here are the major items on the agenda for the meeting:

• The Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy will give a 30-minute presentation on its “Don’t Waste L.A.” campaign related to the waste industry in Los Angeles. The campaign claims that environmental issues in the city will improve if its trash collection system is streamlined, which, in turn, will lead to better working conditions for employees of trash hauling companies.

• Discussion and possible action to approve and submit a letter of support for the so-called Exclusive Commercial and Multifamily Solid Waste Franchise Hauling System backed by the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy. (In 2012, the Los Angeles City Council voted to grant exclusive franchises to commercial trash hauling companies within 11 proposed geographical regions of the city, including in neighborhoods that have large apartment complexes. A different company would be given a franchise to each of the 11 areas.)

• Discussion and possible action on a request that HHPNC support and endorse the California Disclose Act (bill SB52), which would expand existing provisions in the state so that every advertisement on television, radio, printed news periodicals and mailers would prominently list the source of funding for the ads, besides showing who politicians will answer to if elected, as well as who benefits from the passage of a particular proposition.

• Discussion and possible action to approve up to $200 for promotional pencils for HHPNC outreach events.

• Discussion and possible action supporting a public question and answer information session from he Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
