Poll: Which Council District Would You Rather Live In?

The draft maps have been released, are you happy with where you might land?

With last week's release of the Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission's draft maps, Angelenos by now have a rough idea of which council District they will inhabit for the next 10 years if the maps are approved.

For most of Highland Park, it will be Council District 1--currently represented by Councilman Ed Reyes, whose term expires in 2013.

The tiny enclave of Garvanza--which falls under the jurisdiction the --will continue to be represented by Council District 14.

Rosa Rivas, co-chariman of the Garvanza Improvement Association and longtime resident, said she was "thrilled" that Garvanza would continue to be represented by Councilman José Huizar.

"I'm thrilled I am still part of CD14," Rivas said. "I think we have a great councilman."

She credited the council office for shepherding community projects--like the completion of the Garvanza Skate Park and the creation of the Highland Park-Garvanza Historic Preservation Overlay Zon--to Huizar and his staff.

"We don't always get what we want right away, but we sit down, we talk and we eventually get things done," Rivas said.

Should the new council district maps be approved, Mount Washington would shift almost entirely from Council District 14 to Council District 1--save for a portion from Division Street spanning east to El Paso Drive, which would be retained by CD 14.

Currently, Mount Washington is mostly encapsulated by Council District 14, with the southwestern portion represented by Council District 1.

For those who want to learn more about the redistricting process and how they can comment on the proposed maps, Redistricting Commission Outreach Specialist Lawrence Joe will be a guest speaker at the Feb. 2, 2012 HHPNC meeting.
