Man Receives 30 Days In Jail For Hollywood Hit And Run

The accident took the life of Andrew Mallard, an Australian man who previously spent 12 years in jail on a wrongful conviction.

HOLLYWOOD, CA — A judge sentenced a Norwalk man to 30 days in county jail, 300 hours of community service and three years probation for the hit-and-run death of Andrew Mallard. Previously, Mallard had been wrongly convicted of murder and spent over a decade in an Australia prison before being released in 2006.

Prosecutors said Mallard was walking across Sunset Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. on April 18, 2019, when Kristopher Ryan Smith hit him with his car. Smith fled the scene before turning himself into police a week later.

The British-born Mallard was initially convicted for the 1994 murder of Pamela Lawrence, who was killed in her jewelry shop in Australia. A team that included a journalist, politician and a lawyer worked together to prove his innocence, eventually convincing an Australian court to toss out his conviction in 2005.
