Explosive Device Detonates in La Cañada Mailbox

An Arson/Explosives unit is dispatched to the 300 block of Noren Street.

An explosive device detonated inside a mailbox at a La Cañada Flintridge residence around 8 p.m. Tuesday night, prompting an Arson/Explosives unit from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department to be dispatched.

The device damaged the mailbox and a nearby car suffered minor damage on the 300 block of Noren Street, according to Lt. Angela Shepard with the LASD Crescenta Valley Station.

Shepard said because the case was being handled by the Arson/Explosives Detail, she didn't yet have a lot of information and did not know what the device was made of.

"It wasn't a bomb, it was an unknown explosive device. I don't know what it was because they didn't tell us," Shepard said. "It was probably a prank, but I don't have the report so I really can't fill in the blanks. I'm assuming it was dry ice or something, but I don't have the report."

Shepard said more details should be available in the afternoon or evening. Patch will update this story as more information is available.
