La Canada Flintridge Boy Wins County Spelling Bee

He beat out 24 others in the county and will now compete in the California State Elementary Spelling Bee Championship.

DOWNEY, CA - Gabriel Gottheim, a sixth-grader from La Cañada Elementary School, qualified for the April 23 California State Elementary Spelling Bee Championship by winning the Los Angeles County Elementary Spelling Bee.

Gottheim beat out 24 fellow school district and charter school champions by correctly spelling memorabilia to conclude the competition Wednesday at the Los Angeles County Office of Education's Conference Center in Downey.

Ryan Yan -- a fourth-grader from Coolidge Elementary School in San Gabriel -- finished second and joined Gottheim in qualifying for the state bee, which will be held at the San Joaquin County Office of Education in Stockton.

Noah Neri, a sixth-grader from Oak Hills Elementary School in Valencia, finished third.

The bee for students from fourth through sixth grades lasted nearly 80 minutes, according to Kostas Kalaitzidis of the Los Angeles County Office of Education, which conducted the competition.
